GRIDSERVE
Context
From start-up to scale-up; turbo-charging GRIDSERVE’S flagship website with Microsoft Azure.
See how Dootrix eliminated downtime and sped up the customer experience by migrating GRIDSERVE.com to Enterprise WordPress on Azure.
By adopting a cloud-native approach, aligning to GRIDSERVE’S core IT strategy, Dootrix migrated sub-scale VMs in AWS, with next to no failover, to the high availability App Service and storage services in Microsoft Azure.
Customer Background
GRIDSERVE are innovating for the good of the planet, developing dependable, low cost, clean energy solutions. From the first EV (Electric Vehicle) charging forecourt in the UK to their EV leasing and remote solar solutions, GRIDSERVE has an impressive dedication to transitioning society away from our harmful reliance on fossil fuels.
Problem
Since launching their first EV charging station in December 2020, GRIDSERVE have enjoyed rapid success. With their increasingly large profile generating raised website traffic, they needed to make sure that their virtual shop front, the corporate site, was fit for purpose.
As an incubated start-up, GRIDSERVE was Azure cloud-native from day one. Their partner eco-system and IT strategy were developed to maximise the cloud benefits of high availability, infrastructure as code, rapid deployment, and cloud innovation. Unfortunately, the website was an outlier.
GRIDSERVE.com, the organisation’s website, had been developed on AWS virtual machines and suffered from a lack of reliability. The frequent outages were compounded by the lack of backups and no failover process. On top of this, they were not maximising the output of their partner/developer eco-system and integrating the site’s data with GRIDSERVE’S business data in Azure was problematic. GRIDSERVE knew the website was becoming a significant risk to their continued growth.
Solution
Following a Dootrix Cloud Migration Assessment, we provided a comprehensive roadmap for website modernisation. With Dootrix migrating and modernising gridserve.com to use Azure, GRIDSERVE would benefit from using cloud-native services and ease data integration with other applications in their infrastructure.
Having created and agreed a migration and modernisation plan, Dootrix brought the website into GRIDSERVE’S Azure estate. Azure services are the backbone of the new site infrastructure, with Azure App Service now hosting the site, Azure MySQL for storage, and Azure Front Door providing the Content Delivery Network. Application Insights are now monitoring the website and have horizontal scaling alertsbased on spikes in network usage requests.
Outcome
Migrating the website from AWS Virtual Machines to Azure while modernising it to leverage Azure services has drastically reduced the support and management burden for GRIDSERVE.
The site performs better with response times down by over 200%, giving clients quicker access to the GRIDSERVE products.
From Braintree, Essex, where they launched the UK’s first EV charging forecourt to their many planned sites across the country, the EV transformation is happening with GRIDSERVE and its modernised website at its core.
Transferable Benefits
By working closely with the stakeholders and understanding their existing issues, we helped the GRIDSERVE to modernise their organisation’s website. Through a migration to Azure as well as modernising using Azure services and microservices, they are able to scale their infrastructure making it suitable for their growing profile. Legacy applications of all sizes can be enhanced with a program of application modernisation and migration.
